If you’ve ever thought about trying to live a little greener, cleaner, or just less plastic-y, you probably also had that moment where your brain melted. “Non-toxic living…where do I even start?” Trust me, we’ve all been there. You pick up a product, read the label, and suddenly feel like you need a PhD in chemistry just to brush your teeth.

That’s exactly the problem Louie Psihoyos(the co-director of The Plastic Detox) and his team faced when they started looking at their own lives. They realized just how hard it was to find products that were both safe and actually practical. It wasn’t about being perfect. It was about trying to make informed choices without turning every day into a scavenger hunt through endless labels and fine print.

The team asked all the questions you probably have: Which products really reduce exposure to harmful chemicals? How do we figure out which plastics actually matter to avoid? Are there alternatives that work and don’t make life more complicated? The answer, it turns out, was…complicated. Very, very complicated.

Over six years of digging, researching, and testing, they realized there wasn’t one place where people could find thoughtful, safer, lower-plastic alternatives that actually worked. Every aisle in every store had something missing: unclear labels, hidden plastics, chemicals you’d never guess were in your shampoo, your dish soap, or even your lip balm. It was overwhelming—not because people weren’t trying, but because the system made it nearly impossible to make clear choices.

So what’s the solution when the problem is literally everywhere? Build the shortcut. Enter The Unplastic Shop.

Created in collaboration with Grove Collaborative, this isn’t about perfection or being 100% plastic-free. It’s about making smarter, high-impact swaps that are realistic for everyday life. Every product in the shop—from kitchen basics like beeswax wraps and glass containers to personal care items like shampoo bars and deodorant—was reviewed by Louie and his team down to the ingredient and packaging level. They wanted to make it easier for people to reduce plastic and exposure to harmful chemicals without having to become a full-time researcher overnight.

The result is a curated destination where the guesswork has already been done. You can see what products meet clear health-informed criteria, know they perform well, and feel confident you’re making a meaningful difference. It’s simple, actionable, and yes—kind of satisfying to know that your dish soap, toothbrush, or lip balm isn’t secretly contributing to your chemical load.

Non-toxic living doesn’t have to be confusing, expensive, or exhausting. The Unplastic Shop is our way of helping people take practical steps—one swap at a time—toward a safer, lower-plastic home. Because when the choices are clear, it’s easier to actually do them. And that’s where change starts.
