Earth Day 2015: Join the Race

“Activism is my rent for living on the planet.” – Alice Walker

Earth Day marks a day we honor the planet and, hopefully, realize we should be respecting the environment we depend on every day of our lives.

We are losing life on Earth 1,000 to 10,000 times faster than the normal rate of extinction. Scientists estimate we may lose half of the planet’s species in the next century, and more than 90% are disappearing from human activities.

But there’s still time.

In honor of Earth Day, here are the top three things you can do for the planet to help in the race against extinction.

1.   Help save sharks.

Studies have linked the disappearance of sharks to entire marine ecosystem collapses, certifying their key role in keeping the ocean (70 percent of Earth’s surface) healthy. Yet, crucial populations of sharks have dropped more than 90% in the one generation, and the majority end up in shark fin soup.

Although many people fear these fascinating creatures, most of it is not justified. In fact, you are more likely to win an Oscar award or die from a vending machine fall than to be killed by a shark. Let’s not be afraid to save the fish that keep the seas rich with life.

Sign the pledge to ban the shark fin trade, then share with your friends on Twitter and Facebook.

2.   Encourage your friends to join in the race against extinction.

We need everyone on the planet to be active and join the race. This Earth Day, remind people of the urgency of this issue. The messages from scientists have been clear, we have time to turn things around but we need to act now.

We made it easy to spread the message about species extinction. Use the sample posts here or just click on the links and retweet/share.

3.   Go meat-free, even if just for one week, and reduce your ecological and carbon footprint.

A major contributor of species extinction is the destruction of biodiverse habitats to raise livestock and grow crops to feed livestock. Eating less meat also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change.

Take a meat free challenge for Earth Day, and see how easy it is to cut it back from your diet.
